State Board of Education must develop a process allowing school boards to apply for permission to use nationally recognized, locally selected assessment options under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act for college and career ready determinations.

State Board of Education shall adopt technical criteria under 20 U.S.C. 6311(b)(2)(H) and 34 CFR 200.3 to evaluate proposed alternative assessments.

Students in grades 3-8 must be assessed annually in English language arts and mathematics; science assessments required at one grade each in grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

Secondary students must take no more than 3 assessments in English language arts and mathematics, with one assessment including a college and career ready determination accepted by Illinois public higher education institutions.

Act takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
