SB3407 Summary

• Amends Section 3-2-5 of the Unified Code of Corrections to make a technical change regarding the organization of the Department of Corrections and Department of Juvenile Justice.

• Corrects duplicative language by removing one instance of "and" in the provision stating the Department of Corrections shall be administered by a Director and an Assistant Director appointed by the Governor.

• Maintains existing provisions requiring the Department of Juvenile Justice to keep persons under 18 years old sight and sound separate from adult offenders in the Department of Corrections.

• Preserves existing requirements for the Department to create a gang intelligence unit supervised by the Director to monitor inmate gang activity and develop policies to deter gang activities.

• Keeps confidentiality protections for gang intelligence information collected by the unit, exempting it from Freedom of Information Act disclosure requests due to its sensitive nature.
