Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, school districts may choose to administer locally-selected assessments instead of the statewide assessment for grades 3-8 English language arts and mathematics.

Local assessments must be State-approved, nationally recognized assessments that include grade level proficiencies and student growth metrics, and must meet standards established by the State Board of Education.

School districts administering local assessments must adhere to any reporting guidelines adopted by the State Board of Education relating to assessment results.

The State Board of Education continues to administer statewide assessments in science (grades 3-12) and secondary education assessments in English language arts and mathematics, with no more than 3 assessments per student.

The State Board of Education shall not assess students in subjects beyond those required by this Section or in English language arts and mathematics if a school district is administering a local assessment instead.
