Cook graduated from Rock Island High School in 1953, served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958, and graduated from Augustana College in 1962

Cook worked as a civilian employee for the U.S. Army for over 30 years, serving as chief of the Abrams Tank Branch at Rock Island Arsenal

Cook was an accomplished Dixieland Jazz musician who played cornet and trombone, performing in multiple bands starting with the Rocky High Corn Band in 1952

Cook is survived by his daughter Jane, stepdaughters Pamela and Deborah, five grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren
