Illinois Senate resolution mourning the death of Melva Jean Halbert, born in January 1935 in Laurel, Mississippi

Halbert worked for the Chicago Board of Education for 27 years before retiring in 1998, starting as a crossing guard with the Chicago Police Department and serving at various elementary schools and Lakeview High School

Served as board member and general member of community organizations including the Menard Block Club, Association for a Better Austin, and Menard Avenue Neighborhood Watch Program; active member of Stone Temple Missionary Baptist Church

Survived by daughter Debra Patrice Elizabeth Halbert Evans, son Michael Anthony Peter Halbert, three grandchildren, four siblings, and numerous extended relatives and friends

Senate extends sincere condolences to Halbert's family and directs presentation of a suitable copy of the resolution to her family
