Frederick E. "Fred" Payne of Champaign passed away on September 1, 2018, at age 96 after being born November 8, 1921, in London Mills.

Worked for Illinois Bell for 37 years until retirement in December 1977, and served as gateman supervisor at Assembly Hall for 32 years.

Served in the United States Army as a teletype technician in 1942 and was presented with a 70-year American Legion certificate in March 2017.

Active community member including Boy Scout leader, member of C-U Elks Lodge, Eagles Lodge, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he served as council president multiple times; also served as election judge and auditor for Champaign County Fair Association.

Illinois Senate expresses condolences to his surviving wife Virginia and daughter Linda Payne, and directs presentation of this resolution to the family.
