Virginia L. Secrest of Wood River died on August 20, 2018, at age 90.

Worked as a clerk and typist at the Granite City Army Depot for 22 years before dedicating herself to honoring U.S. Armed Forces veterans.

Led efforts to place flags on graves of veterans in Upper Alton Cemetery and established the Avenue of Flags flown every Memorial Day, with a flagpole along Home Adams Parkway as her lasting legacy.

Survived by three sons (Paul, David, and John Nagel), 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and daughters-in-law Rebecca and Renee Nagel.

Illinois Senate extends condolences to her family and directs a copy of the resolution be presented to the Secrest family.
