Gary T. Del Re of Mundelein passed away on October 28, 2018; he was born August 26, 1949, in Chicago to Ken and Dolores Del Re.

Served as a career first responder, rising from patrolman to Commander with the Buffalo Grove Police Department, and was appointed and elected Lake County Sheriff in 1998 and 2002.

Founded and commanded the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force in 1992, earned bachelor's and master's degrees, and taught at Northwestern University Center for Public Safety while serving northern Cook and Lake Counties for over 30 years.

Known for expertise in Civil War history, American presidents, and Abraham Lincoln, as well as for his humor, humility, and kindness.

Illinois Senate expresses condolences to his surviving family including his mother Dolores, brothers Ken and Phillip, sons Gary Jr. and David, four grandchildren, and extended family.
