Cook County remains one judicial circuit; Illinois outside Cook County is divided into 23 judicial circuits (increased from 22 by creation of the 24th Circuit).

The 6th judicial circuit is divided on December 7, 2020, into the 6th circuit (Champaign County only) and the 24th circuit (Douglas, Moultrie, Macon, DeWitt, and Piatt counties).

Of the 5 at-large circuit judgeships in the former 6th circuit, 3 are assigned to the new 6th circuit and 2 to the 24th circuit based on judge residency; Champaign County resident judgeships become at-large for the 6th circuit.

The Supreme Court must assign resident judgeships from Macon, Moultrie, Douglas, and DeWitt/Piatt counties to the 24th circuit and allocate associate judges, personnel, property, funds, and pending matters between the two circuits before December 7, 2020.

Actions, rights, obligations, and duties arising from the former 6th circuit before December 7, 2020, remain valid and unaffected by the circuit division.
