Professional educator licenses expire September 1 and require renewal every 5 years with 120 hours of professional development, except administrators (100 hours) and National Board certified teachers (60 hours).

Lapsed licenses can be reinstated by paying a $500 penalty or completing 9 semester hours of coursework in the educator's endorsement area, plus all back registration fees.

Administrators and teacher leaders in administrative roles (50%+ of day) must complete one Illinois Administrators' Academy course each fiscal year in addition to professional development hours.

Approved professional development providers include State Board of Education, regional offices, higher education institutions, school districts, professional associations, and state agencies; activities must align to state standards and demonstrate impact on student learning or school improvement.

Retired educators, school support personnel with current professional licenses, and those working less than 50% in licensed positions are exempt from professional development hour requirements but must pay registration fees to maintain their licenses.
