Drivers must stop before meeting or overtaking a school bus stopped anywhere (highway, roadway, parking lot, school property) when visual signals are in operation, and cannot proceed until the bus resumes motion, is signaled by the driver, or signals are deactivated.

Stop signal arms must be extended only after the school bus comes to a complete stop for loading or discharging pupils and closed before the bus moves again.

Alternately flashing amber signal lamps must be actuated during at least the last 100 feet (urban areas) or 200 feet (non-urban areas) before the school bus stops for loading or discharging pupils.

Alternately flashing headlamps may be operated while red or amber signal lamps are actuated.

Mandatory fines for violating school bus stop requirements increase from $150 to $300 for first offense and from $500 to $1,000 for second or subsequent violations; driving privileges are suspended for 3 months (first offense) or 1 year (subsequent offenses within 5 years).
