IL HB2177

Amends Section 22-27 of the School Code to allow school boards to posthumously award high school diplomas to service members killed in action while performing active military duty with the U.S. armed forces.

Service member must have resided in the school district, left high school before graduating to serve in the armed forces, and did not receive a high school diploma.

Maintains existing provisions allowing school boards to award diplomas to honorably discharged veterans from World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict who meet similar criteria.

Authorizes the State Board of Education and Department of Veterans' Affairs to issue rules necessary to implement the diploma award provisions.

Takes effect upon becoming law.
