IL HB2287

Amends Section 13-214.1 of the Code of Civil Procedure to establish statute of limitations for civil damage actions arising from criminal acts.

Actions for damages from first degree murder or Class X felonies may be commenced no later than 10 years after the defendant completes their sentence.

Actions for damages from theft exceeding $100,000, identity theft, aggravated identity theft, financial exploitation of elderly persons or persons with disabilities, or offenses under Article 16H or Section 17-10.6 of the Criminal Code may be commenced within 10 years of the last criminal act.

If any other law provides a longer statute of limitations period, that longer period applies instead.

Effective date: July 1, 2019.
