IL HB2525

Expands eligibility for township discontinuance to apply to all townships within coterminous or substantially coterminous municipalities, removing previous restrictions based on county population (3 million or more) and territory size (7 square miles or more).

Allows discontinuance through either township board or city council adoption of an ordinance, or upon petition signed by at least 10% of registered voters in the township.

Requires a referendum proposition to be submitted to township voters at the next election, asking whether the township organization should continue; if voters approve discontinuance, all township rights, powers, duties, assets, and liabilities transfer to the coterminous municipality.

Prohibits resubmission of a discontinuance proposition for 4 years after initial voter rejection.

Repeals Article 28 of the Township Code regarding discontinuance of specified townships in St. Clair County, and takes effect immediately upon enactment.
