IL HB2627

Amends the School Code to require law enforcement officers, school resource officers, and school security personnel to notify parents or guardians before detaining and questioning students under 18 years old who are suspected of committing a crime on school grounds.

Requires documentation of the time and manner of parental notification or attempted notification.

Mandates reasonable efforts to have the student's parent or guardian present during questioning, or if unavailable, requires school personnel such as social workers, psychologists, nurses, or counselors to be present.

Requires reasonable efforts to ensure a law enforcement officer trained in youth interactions is present during questioning, with satisfaction of this requirement met by officers with approved youth investigation training or juvenile police officers.

Exempts the requirements from application in emergency situations where urgent action is necessary to prevent bodily harm, apprehend armed or fleeing suspects, prevent evidence destruction, or address other dangerous situations.
