HB2850 Summary

• Amends the School Code definition of "physician" in concussion protocols to include chiropractic physicians licensed under the Medical Practice Act of 1987, in addition to physicians licensed to practice medicine.

• Applies to concussion evaluation and management requirements for student athletes in interscholastic athletic activities at public, private, and charter schools beginning with the 2016-2017 school year.

• Requires schools to establish concussion oversight teams with return-to-play and return-to-learn protocols based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

• Mandates that students suspected of sustaining a concussion be immediately removed from play and cannot return until evaluated by a treating physician, athletic trainer, advanced practice registered nurse, or physician assistant who provides written clearance.

• Requires coaches, game officials, and healthcare professionals serving on concussion oversight teams to complete concussion training courses every 2 years through approved providers.
