• Authorizes the Department of Human Rights to petition and intervene as a party in complaints before the Commission if the case involves public interest matters, departmental interests different from existing parties, departmental expertise, or inadequate representation of the Department's interests.

• Grants the Department, as an intervenor, all rights of an original party and allows the Commission to award remedies authorized under Section 8A-104 upon Department intervention.

• Allows the Attorney General to intervene on behalf of the Department in civil actions filed by complainants in State or federal court if the Department certifies the case is of general public importance.

• Permits the court or jury to award any remedies under Section 8A-104 when the Attorney General intervenes in civil court proceedings.

• Adds authority for the Department to intervene in complaints filed under the Illinois Human Rights Act pending before the Commission.
