Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) had approximately 17,481 children under its service as of June 30, 2018, with a mission to promote prevention, child safety, permanency, and well-being.

Governor Pritzker and the General Assembly budgeted an additional $128.2 million for DCFS for Fiscal Year 2020 and authorized hiring of 300 additional employees.

123 children who were or had been under DCFS service died between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.
