SB0148 - Gun Crime Charging and Sentencing Accountability and Transparency Act

• State's Attorney must file a written statement with the court at or before sentencing when a defendant charged with an illegal firearm offense pleads guilty to a reduced or non-weapons charge, explaining why the original weapons offense was not pursued.

• The written statement becomes part of the court record and must be provided to any person who requests a copy.

• Judges must issue a written sentencing order in cases where the original charge involved illegal use or possession of a firearm, stating their reasons for the sentence imposed or plea agreement accepted.

• Copies of the written sentencing orders must be provided to any person upon request.
