Term limits imposed by municipalities must apply prospectively only and cannot restrict individuals based on office held before the term limit's effective date.

Term limits apply only to the same office or category of municipal office where imposed; limits cannot be extended to different categories of municipal offices.

Home rule units are prohibited from regulating term limits in a manner inconsistent with this Section, which is designated as a limitation on home rule powers under the Illinois Constitution.

The prospective application requirement applies to all term limits imposed by referendum, ordinance, or other means on or after November 8, 2016.
