SB1737 Summary

• Establishes ineligibility for local school council (LSC) members based on appearance on the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website, Statewide Sex Offender Database, or Statewide Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Database.

• Requires the general superintendent to check these databases and notify any LSC member or member-elect found on them, with removal by the school board subject to a hearing.

• Requires LSC members who engage in school activities beyond their official council duties to comply with all applicable board rules and policies regarding employees or volunteers.

• Removes previous provisions that made individuals ineligible based on criminal convictions for specific offenses listed in Section 34-18.5.

• Eliminates the requirement for incoming LSC members to undergo criminal background investigations prior to taking office.
