SB1822 Summary

• Extends the evaluation cycle for teachers in contractual continued service with "excellent" or "proficient" ratings from every 2 school years to every 4 school years, effective September 1, 2020.

• Requires school districts to establish an informal evaluation plan ensuring teachers rated "excellent" or "proficient" receive informal evaluations at least once every 2 school years.

• Maintains annual evaluations for teachers not in contractual continued service and requires evaluations within one school year for teachers rated "needs improvement" or "unsatisfactory."

• Preserves existing remediation and dismissal procedures for underperforming teachers, including 90-school-day remediation periods and consulting teacher involvement for those rated "unsatisfactory."

• Allows school districts to forego remediation and seek dismissal if a teacher receives a second "unsatisfactory" rating within 36 months of completing a prior remediation plan.
