Department of State Police may appoint investigators to collect and preserve physical evidence, forensic art, forensic mapping, photography, sketches, diagrams, and animations of crime and crash scenes.

Crime scene investigators may exercise all powers of peace officers for purposes of crime scene investigation and must complete a firearm course approved by the Department.

Director may authorize investigators and other Department employees exercising peace officer powers to wear a distinct badge that states Department authorization, indicates crime scene investigator position, and contains a unique identifying number.

Department may issue crime scene investigators a distinct uniform and dress code that clearly distinguishes their position from uniforms worn by State Police officers.
