Prairie Research Institute shall use remote sensing technologies, including helicopter-based electromagnetics and geologic modeling, to examine unconsolidated geologic materials overlying natural gas storage facilities within the Mahomet Aquifer and identify potential natural gas migration pathways.

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency shall prioritize inspection of unregulated or underregulated landfills overlying the Mahomet Aquifer, considering factors such as aquifer depth, liner systems, groundwater monitoring, floodplain location, and proximity to potable water wells.

EPA shall use existing information from state and federal agencies to identify unknown or underregulated waste disposal sites overlying the Mahomet Aquifer that may threaten water resources, and archive information about prioritized landfills including ownership and waste history.

EPA shall design and implement up to 2 pilot studies of landfills overlying the Mahomet Aquifer, with one required at the Pekin Metro Landfill in Tazewell County, to inspect contamination threats and install groundwater monitoring mechanisms.

Following pilot project completion, EPA shall evaluate remote sensing technologies like LiDAR to identify landfill defects and surface features, and identify additional procedures needed to address threats from unregulated landfills statewide.
