IL SB2340

Requires prescribers licensed to prescribe controlled substances to discuss risks of physical and psychological dependence with patients under 18 before issuing Schedule II opioid prescriptions, or with the patient's parent or guardian if the patient is not emancipated.

Prescribers must document the discussion in the patient's medical record when the conversation occurs.

Exempts patients currently receiving hospice care from a comprehensive hospice licensed under the Hospice Program Licensing Act from the discussion requirement.

Defines "opioid" as narcotic drugs or substances classified as Schedule II controlled substances under specified sections of the Illinois Controlled Substances Act.

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
