SB2902 Summary

• Repeals Section 11-208.6 of the Illinois Vehicle Code, which authorized automated traffic law enforcement systems (red light cameras) at intersections to photograph vehicles failing to stop at red lights.

• Prohibits any unit of local government, including home rule units, from enacting or enforcing ordinances using automated traffic law enforcement systems to record red light violations at intersections.

• Limits automated speed enforcement systems to municipalities with a population of 1,000,000 or more and restricts their use to designated school and park safety zones only.

• Removes references to red light camera violations (Section 11-208.6) throughout the Vehicle Code while maintaining provisions for speed enforcement systems (Section 11-208.8) and other automated traffic violations.

• Establishes that regulation of automated speed enforcement systems is an exclusive State power, denying home rule authority to counties and municipalities on this matter.
