SB3717 Summary

• All public schools must provide daily supervised, unstructured, child-directed play for students in kindergarten through grade 8.

• Play time must be at least 60 minutes daily for school days 5 clock hours or longer, or at least one-fifth of daily attendance for shorter school days, divided into periods of at least 15 consecutive minutes.

• Play time may not include computers, tablets, phones, or videos; schools are encouraged to provide outdoor play but may hold it indoors in spaces promoting physical activity.

• Play time does not count toward physical education requirements and is separate from physical education courses.

• Schools must prohibit withholding play time as discipline or punishment, except when a student's participation poses an immediate safety threat; students with disabilities must be included to the maximum extent appropriate.

• Effective July 1, 2020.
