IL SB3842

Requires every school district, charter school, alternative school, and publicly-funded school to develop and annually communicate an absenteeism and truancy policy to students and parents or guardians.

Policy must include a definition of valid causes for absence, diagnostic procedures to identify reasons for unexcused absences through interviews with students, parents, guardians, and school officials, and identification of supportive services for truant students.

Supportive services must include parent conferences, student counseling, family counseling, and information about available community services relevant to truant and chronically truant students.

Policy must incorporate provisions relating to chronic absenteeism and be updated and filed with the State Board of Education every 2 years.

Effective July 1, 2020.
