Illinois Senate mourns the death of Gary D. Niebur of Edwardsville, who passed away on May 2, 2020.

Served as CEO of the Edwardsville YMCA for 35 years beginning in 1982, establishing a financial assistance scholarship program and expanding the organization to three locations before retiring in 2018.

Served as Edwardsville city alderman for eight years starting in 1985 and as mayor for 20 years beginning in 1993; also served as president of the Illinois Municipal League in 2002.

Received numerous community service awards including the Jaycees Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Illinois, Rotary Club International Paul Harris Fellowship Award, Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award, and Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award.

Survived by his wife Debra, four children (Ashley, Amanda, Abby, and Andrew), two grandchildren, three siblings, and extended family; preceded in death by his father Melvin.
