Gilbert "Sonny" Virgil Short of Moline died on May 16, 2020, and the Illinois Senate expresses condolences to his family and loved ones.

Born March 12, 1938, Short graduated from Joy High School in 1956 and served in the U.S. Navy after graduation.

Founded A-1 Fire Equipment in Moline in 1968, which he operated for 36 years until retirement in 2004, and also founded Speedway Fire and Rescue, a volunteer fire department specializing in motorsports rescue for over 50 years.

Served as an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary as a Flotilla Commander along the Mississippi and Rock Rivers.

Survived by three children (Gilbert Wayne, Deborah, and Curtis), longtime companion Kathy Gile, sister Sandra Downing, and ten grandchildren.
