Founded and built Family Video into the third-largest video store chain in the country with 800 stores and over 10,000 employees

Established the Hoogland Family Foundation, which made substantial charitable gifts to organizations including the Hoogland Center of the Arts, University of Chicago, Stanford University, and other educational and community institutions

Survived by his wife of 67 years Kathleen, four children, 16 grandchildren, and five great-grandsons
