Johnson served 22 years in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant, and worked for the Illinois Department of Economic Development for 20 years before retiring in 2012

Earned three associate degrees, two bachelor's degrees, a master's degree, and a Ph.D., and was an active member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and volunteer mentor with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America

Survived by one son, three daughters, 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews

Illinois Senate expresses condolences to Johnson's family and directs that a copy of the resolution be presented to his family
