Served as a sergeant in the 3rd Battalion 11th Marine Division in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969 to 1970, operating M113 armored personnel carriers during the Vietnam War

Worked at the Rock Island Arsenal for 33 years and was deployed twice as a civilian contractor to Afghanistan for the Department of Defense before retiring in 2006

Memberships included the Milan Rifle Club and Milan American Legion Post 569; hobbies included turkey and antelope hunting, fishing, restoring antique tractors, and traveling
