HB0218 Summary

• Authorizes the Secretary of State and Illinois Supreme Court to jointly implement a program allowing reinstatement of suspended driving privileges for low-income citizens earning less than $50,000 per year whose licenses have been suspended for more than 3 months.

• Excludes persons whose licenses have been revoked or suspended for driving under the influence violations under Sections 11-501, 11-501.1, or 11-501.9.

• Eligible participants may apply online or in person and receive a daily 10-hour driving window for transportation to and from work.

• Persons who drive for 6 months without violations of limited privileges or specified traffic laws become eligible for full license restoration upon payment of $50 and completion of a free 4-hour driver's education course developed by the Secretary of State.

• Requires cooperation among the Secretary of State, Illinois Supreme Court, local law enforcement, Illinois State Police, and circuit court clerks to implement the program, effective immediately.
