Fire chiefs of secondary employers must report any injury, illness, or exposure incurred by secondary employee firefighters to both the primary employer's pension fund and the Department of Insurance within 96 hours of occurrence.

Secondary employers must annually prepare and transmit a certified report accounting for all hours worked and wages paid to secondary employee firefighters to the primary employer's pension fund, the Department of Insurance, and the employee within 30 days after the fiscal year ends.

Secondary employee firefighters cannot qualify for benefits or creditable service credit based on their employment with secondary employers.

Municipalities employing full-time firefighters are deemed primary employers, while municipalities with 5,000+ inhabitants employing firefighters who earn service credit at a primary employer's pension fund are deemed secondary employers.
