HB1829 Summary

• Allows chief county assessment officers in counties with more than 3,000,000 residents, and in other counties by ordinance or resolution, to automatically renew homestead exemptions for persons with disabilities without requiring annual applications.

• Automatic renewal applies to persons who previously applied for the exemption and presented a Disability Identification Card stating Class 2 disability status, and continues through the end of the taxable year when the card expires.

• Exemption remains at $2,000 annual deduction from property value for persons with disabilities who meet eligibility requirements including occupying the property as primary residence and being liable for real estate taxes.

• Automatic renewal does not apply if the exemption was previously deemed erroneous or if the person reported their ineligibility, and assessment officers must notify persons if renewal will not occur and provide an application to renew manually.

• Existing provisions for proof of disability (Social Security benefits or Class 2 Disability Identification Card) continue to apply, and persons cannot claim this exemption if claiming other homestead exemptions under Sections 15-165 or 15-169.
