IL HB1919

Amends the Illinois Election Code to prohibit political committees from making expenditures for payments to attorneys, expert witnesses, investigators, or others to provide a defense in a criminal case.

Adds this prohibition as item (12) to the existing list of prohibited uses of campaign funds in Section 9-8.10 of the Election Code.

Maintains existing enforcement mechanisms allowing the State Board of Elections to investigate violations, levy fines up to $500 per violation (or the expenditure amount plus $500 for amounts over $500), and issue compliance rulings.

Does not restrict legitimate uses of campaign funds for governmental duties, customary officeholder expenses, or other previously permitted purposes.
