All vehicles registered in Illinois must have a starter interrupt device ("kill switch") installed to allow law enforcement to remotely disable the vehicle at the owner's request

Existing registered vehicles without starter interrupt devices must be retrofitted within 2 years of the law taking effect

All new vehicles sold in Illinois after the effective date must be manufactured with starter interrupt devices that law enforcement can activate at the owner's request

Starter interrupt devices cannot be activated solely as a means to secure payment on a vehicle (prohibiting use by lenders for repossession purposes)
