School boards must require schools to provide at least 60 minutes of daily supervised, unstructured, child-directed play for all students in kindergarten through grade 8.

Play periods must be at least 15 consecutive minutes in length, allow for unstructured play, may include organized games, and cannot include computers, tablets, phones, or videos.

Schools are encouraged to provide play time outdoors but may hold it indoors.

Play time cannot count toward physical education requirements, and physical education time cannot count toward the daily play time requirement.

School boards must prohibit withholding play time as a disciplinary or punitive action, and play time counts as clock hours for instructional time purposes; effective July 1, 2021.
