IL HB3574

Amends the Illinois Election Code Section 9-8.10 to prohibit political committees from making expenditures for payments to attorneys, expert witnesses, investigators, or others to provide a defense in a criminal case.

Adds this restriction as subsection (a)(12) to the existing list of prohibited expenditures by political committees.

Maintains enforcement authority of the Illinois State Board of Elections to investigate violations upon receipt of a verified complaint and levy fines up to $500 per violation or the expenditure amount plus $500 for larger amounts.

Does not affect existing prohibitions on other personal or non-campaign uses of political committee funds, including personal residence expenses, clothing, travel, club dues, educational expenses, and certain payments to public officials.
