• Amends the Illinois Public Aid Code to require coverage of allogeneic islet cell transplantation and associated immunosuppressive medications under the medical assistance program for eligible persons with brittle type 1 diabetes who have developed hypoglycemic unawareness after intensive insulin therapy and experience life-threatening severe hypoglycemic episodes.

• Modifies Section 5-5 of the Illinois Public Aid Code (305 ILCS 5/5-5) to add islet cell transplantation as a covered medical service within the existing framework of medical assistance services.

• Applies to medical assistance recipients who meet specified clinical criteria demonstrating severe, uncontrollable type 1 diabetes with dangerous low blood sugar episodes despite intensive treatment.
