HB4230 Summary

• Amends Illinois Vehicle Code Section 6-106.1 to allow school bus driver permit applicants whose licenses were suspended solely for failure to pay child support within the past 3 years to remain eligible for a permit.

• Maintains all existing requirements for school bus driver permits including fingerprint-based criminal background checks, medical examinations with drug testing, written exams on school bus safety, and completion of initial classroom and annual refresher training courses.

• Permits initially issued in provisional status pending completion of Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background investigation; Secretary of State removes provisional status upon successful completion of FBI background check.

• Requires permit holders to notify their employer and Secretary of State within 5 days if convicted or placed under court supervision for offenses that would make them ineligible; failure to notify is punishable as petty offense for first violation and Class B misdemeanor for subsequent violations.

• Authorizes Secretary of State to cancel or suspend permits for various violations including failure to pass drug tests, failure to maintain valid commercial driving privileges, failure to complete vehicle inspections, or refusal to submit to alcohol or drug testing.
