Licensed dentists must obtain an appropriate permit from the Department to perform dentistry while a certified registered nurse anesthetist administers conscious sedation, deep sedation, or general anesthesia.

Certified registered nurse anesthetists providing anesthesia services in dental offices must enter into a written collaborative agreement with the operating dentist that describes their working relationship and authorizes specific categories of care and procedures.

The operating dentist must approve the anesthesia plan prepared by the nurse anesthetist and remain physically present and available on the premises during anesthesia delivery for emergency consultation and treatment.

Nurse anesthetists may select, order, and administer medications including controlled substances and apply medical devices for anesthesia services under the agreed-upon anesthesia plan.

Holders of faculty limited licenses may advertise their specialty degree as part of their ability to practice at a clinic or office affiliated with a dental school.
