IL HB4839

Raises the age threshold for firearm storage requirements from 14 to 18 years old under Section 24-9 of the Criminal Code of 2012.

Eliminates the exception that allowed firearms to be stored in "some other location that a reasonable person would believe to be secure from a minor," now requiring firearms to be either secured with a locking device or placed in a securely locked box or container.

Maintains existing penalties: first violation is a Class C misdemeanor with a minimum $1,000 fine, and second or subsequent violations are Class A misdemeanors.

Preserves exemptions for minors who use firearms in lawful self-defense or defense of another, and for firearms obtained through unlawful entry of premises.
