HB5100 Summary

• Expands accident reporting requirements to include vehicles involved in accidents with school buses (regardless of damage amount) and accidents within 50 feet of a school bus resulting in personal injury or death to persons boarding or exiting the bus.

• Requires drivers involved in qualifying accidents to immediately notify local police (if in municipality) or county sheriff/Illinois State Police (if outside municipality) by fastest available means of communication when no police officer is present.

• Authorizes the Secretary of State to suspend driver's licenses or nonresident driving privileges of any person who fails to report a traffic accident as required by law.

• Updates cross-references in the Illinois Vehicle Code from Sections 11-406 and 11-410 to Section 11-407 to reflect consolidated accident reporting procedures.

• Maintains existing accident reporting thresholds of $1,500 in property damage (or $500 for uninsured vehicles subject to Section 7-601) for standard motor vehicle accidents involving injury, death, or property damage.
