Amends Section 27-17 of the School Code to add water safety education as a required component of safety instruction for students in prekindergarten through grade 6.

Water safety instruction must incorporate educational materials and resources developed by the American Red Cross and the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.

Maintains existing safety education requirements including automobile safety, home safety, recreational safety, CPR for grades 9-11, and CPR/automated external defibrillator training for grades 6-8.

Educator preparation programs approved by the State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board must include water safety instruction appropriate to the grade level of the educator license.

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
