• Allows practitioners to prescribe more than a 7-day opiate supply if medically necessary for acute conditions, chronic pain management, cancer-related pain, or palliative care, with documentation in patient records and notation that non-opiate alternatives were inappropriate.

• Exempts medications designed for substance abuse or opioid dependence treatment from these limitations.

• Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
