Illinois-licensed advanced practice registered nurses (nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and clinical nurse specialists) may practice without a written collaborative agreement if they complete 250 hours of continuing education and 4,000 hours of clinical experience in their certification area after attaining national certification.

APRNs with full practice authority may prescribe legend drugs and Schedule II through V controlled substances, with restrictions on benzodiazepines and Schedule II opioids requiring monthly consultation with a physician and recording in the Prescription Monitoring Program.

APRNs with full practice authority may obtain Illinois controlled substance licenses and federal Drug Enforcement Administration numbers, and may use only local anesthetics in their practice.

The scope of practice excludes operative surgery, though APRNs may assist in surgical procedures, and does not authorize services required by law to be performed by physicians.

The Department of Financial and Professional Regulation may adopt rules to administer the provisions, including forms and fees; this section is scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2028.
