IL SB0554

Amends the Criminal Code of 2012 to prohibit felons from knowingly possessing weapons prohibited under unlawful use of weapons statutes or firearm ammunition in any vehicle, on or about their person, on their land, in their abode, or at their fixed place of business.

Maintains existing prohibition on weapons possession by felons with an exception for those granted relief by the Director of the Department of State Police under the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act.

Establishes graduated penalties: Class 3 felony (2-10 years) for first violation; Class 2 felony (3-14 years) for second or subsequent violations; Class 2 felony (3-14 years) for those convicted of forcible felonies, Article 24 felonies, stalking, or drug-related Class 2+ felonies.

Classifies violation as Class X felony when the firearm possessed is a machine gun, and imposes enhanced sentences up to 14 years for those on parole or mandatory supervised release.

Maintains existing penalties for incarcerated individuals, including Class 1 felony for weapon possession and Class X felony (12-50 years) for firearm or ammunition possession within correctional facilities.
