IL SB1944

Amends the Juvenile Court Act of 1987 to mandate detention of minors age 10 and older arrested for vehicular hijacking or aggravated vehicular hijacking in authorized detention facilities pending a detention or shelter care hearing.

Requires the court to determine if probable cause exists that the minor is delinquent and if: (1) secure custody is necessary for protection of the minor or others; (2) the minor is likely to flee the jurisdiction; or (3) the minor was taken into custody under a warrant.

If the court makes an affirmative determination, the minor shall remain detained until the disposition of an adjudicatory hearing.

Provides that prior findings of delinquency for vehicular hijacking or aggravated vehicular hijacking shall be given greater weight when determining whether secured custody is necessary.

Removes vehicular hijacking and aggravated vehicular hijacking from the list of offenses requiring mandatory consultation with the State's Attorney before release, making them subject to automatic detention instead.
